• Collect Black Huorn heartwood
• Collect treated lebethron (/)
• Fashion a Bow of Shadowy Might and show it to Giles Chadwick
• BackgroundGiles Chadwick gave you his notes and the recipe for fashioning a Bow of Shadowy Might. Giles Chadwick asked you to prove your woodworking ability by making a Bow of Shadowy Might for him to judge.
DescriptionThe Note Reads:

When Trestlebridge is safe and has been defended from her enemies, I will require the help of Eriador's most skilled craftsmen for my next project: the building of a great wooden city in the Misty Mountains. If you have such skill within you, this test of mine will prove it, and I will remember your name when the time comes. If not, well, there is still time for you to practice your craft. With enough hard work, you might still attain the necessary skill. You could still be a part of my life's greatest work! But it will be much simpler if you pass this test of mine by constructing a Bow of Shadowy Might to rival even my own!

TREATED LEBETHRON

To make the finest bow, you will need the finest pieces of wood. Five pieces of lebethron will allow you to pick and choose the wood most suitable to form the stave. An artisan forester can treat the wood so it can best resist the elements and remain sturdy even through the bending process.

BLACK HUORN HEARTWOOD

The wilderness of the Trollshaws is home to many strange creatures, and only an unwise man leaves the relative safety of the road...an unwise man or one given to the craft of woodworking, for wood taken from the Trollshaws is of unusual strength and beauty! When I was a much younger man than I am today, I fashioned a Bow of Shadowy Might for myself and used in its construction some Black Huorn heartwood that I found near Taur Ornolf, south of the sloping pass into Rivendell. Something fell lives now by Taur Ornolf and has stirred the trolls there into madness. If you go that way in search of some heartwood, bring caution with you.

When you have obtained these components and have used them in the fashioning of your bow, bring it to me, and I will judge its worth! I look forwards to seeing what you can do!

What??? <2007-05-15 00:33:09>
Fraank <Guest>This is Heart of wood 3 and 4 mixed. HoW 4 is a lvl 40 quest and does not require the twisted branch that is HoW 3 the second map is also HoW 3. HoW 4 should have a map of the trollshalls.

RE: What??? <2007-05-20 23:33:25>
Andy <Guest>That's right, this is totally wrong. Please fix this!

Loc <2007-06-18 21:38:14>
Bubbas <Guest>Anyone have any pointers in abtaining this Black piece of heartwood? Was there tonight and couldnt find it=/

Black Huorn Heartwood location <2007-06-22 06:49:50>
panheadhere are the coordinates S 35.9, W 7.2, same spot where odon is from book 4 chapter 6. You can just run up and grab it, if you are below lvl 40, might be a little hard to get there, but otherwise this is soloable.

How do i get this quest? <2007-07-12 01:00:37>
Kris <Guest>I'm 440/440 artisan woodworker, but can't get anything from Giles.

expert woodworker <2007-07-17 12:49:08>
genarond <Guest>u may hav to talk to an expert woodworker before u can get the quest from giles, try the one in esteldin

quest <2007-07-17 16:49:16>
alister <Guest>i recieved the quest form the expert woods in esteldin.

<2007-08-11 01:16:26>
<Guest>There is also the expert woodworker in the shire N of Hobbiton in Overhill.

Black Huorn Heartwood <2007-08-14 02:11:27>
stell <Guest>Black Huorn Heartwood is a object which is just before the ent creature called Onodrim(chapter 6 quest). You an run and grab it solo since there is no casting bar when try to grab it. If you try solo, when enter the valey, pay attention on the drakes - they have HUGE agro range and ranged attack which hits very hard. The other way is wait for group to come for chapter 6 and just follow them to the place.

<2007-09-18 08:25:42>
SoloMyRear <Guest>Someon is on crack. Mobs are 40+ elites guarding both entrances into the southern part of teh giant valley. Tried using Sylvan Shadows as an elf Guardian at lev 38 and the Wood trolls spotted and beat the crud out of me. Easy to solo if someone cears the path in front of you maybe. Getting past the drakes is the easy part.

<2007-09-19 21:07:53>
<Guest>Crack or not, I found this easy to solo as a 43 Hunter. A combination of care and outright running gets you past the drakes easily enough and then sure the wood-trolls will spot you as you run in to grab the Heartwood but I easily had time and health to run and grab it (then Desperate Flight to safety for a Hunter, others might have to take a death).

<2007-10-04 01:04:21>
Zeldanya <Guest>I'm a 35 Burgler and was able to stealth to Onodrim using what we burglers do best. The Ent will not attack and just take the heartwood when patrols are not near. I stealthed back out with no fighting at all, solo. Burglers rock.

Just run in ... <2007-10-05 23:47:43>
AelenidanAfter reading the posts just found the little area where Black Huorn Heartwood was. I am a 44 Elf Hunter, but my Sylvan Shadows was down. Just ran in and clicked on it. No cast timer. After I got the quest update, just ran out to the right following the wall. There is an area there with no mobs. Outran the agro from the wood trolls and ported to Esteldin to ride back to Trestlebridge.

HoW 4 <2007-10-18 00:28:05>
Galdormoth <Guest>I have been going nuts asking people about this one. For some unknown reason I have not been offered this quest. I was finally able to get one of the game masters to tell me that it s because I haven't done some other quest. Since HoW has been done since about level 30 (I'm 43 now) I have no clue what it could be. So if any of you out there know what quest you got done right before it was offered to you could you please post it. Thanx

Missing Quest <2007-10-19 12:22:59>
Elwyin_of_HODGaldormoth, Have You Accepted and completed The Quest that gave You access to Superior Workbench ??? You could get Tier 3 Completed and Tier 4 Unlocked without accepting that. It was just for talking to the NPC, however unless You accept and complete the Superior Workbench quest I don't think You can progress. It is given by the NPC that completed Tier 3 and unlocked Tier 4. /Elwyin of Holy Order of Dragons

Right <2007-10-22 21:16:59>
<Guest>You know, there's ALWAYS someone who says " Yeah man... simple, I soloed it at level 10" or some such nonsense. Those who say they did are totally full of it. This loot is surrounded by a gauntlet of about 20 elite , level 40 - 43 trolls. You soloed it? Your azzz you sololed it!

could not hunt onodrim <2007-10-30 21:57:48>
Steve <Guest>Those who solowed this one without help or stealth have my respect. I Hichehiked with some other players past the drakes, than ran all the way south next to a wall dodging rocks and all kind of creatures. There I could rest. There is a valey packed with creatures and I think the loot is at the middle but I could not could not hunt onodrim? I ran towards the middle and ofcourse got killed. Is there a specific detail in the landscape towards wich I should run? Thx in advance

Location <2007-11-22 21:13:30>
<Guest>I just found it now, after looking around for ages. The location was: 35.8S, 7.2W

<2007-11-25 22:00:06>
<Guest>This one is easy once you know exactly where it is. Once in the valley its the middle entrance. Hug the wall on the lefty hand side of the entrance. The wood is directly opposite the tree at the entrance. Run in pick it up and then run out.

<2007-12-04 19:52:51>
BerrylJust soloed it with my lvl 20 hunter at the first attempt. Some people where hunting drakes, but I got aggro from a bat on the way. Continued to run to the heartwood. The trolls whacked me down to 5% health, but I was able to grab the wood and to evac out. But.. first I took my lvl 40 burglar to sneak in and spot the exact place of the wood. It is leaning at the left side of the gorge, when you enter by the middle entrance.

Solo... <2007-12-10 23:09:21>
Musje <Guest>It is possible to solo. after getting my ass kicked multiple times, i finally managed to get to the wood troll area without being atked on the way (just 1 drake, but he wandered off quick enough) then when at the wood trolls, i ran in and grabbed the stuff. after grabbing i immedeatly died. no way you can get a lvl 20 there... sorry but that is just plain lies. i got killed after just grabbing it with my lvl 43 ministrel, needing to use lay of the hammerhand, sucked up all of my power, then when nearly dead used the instant heal of 1200 or something and i died after just grabbing it. this isnt possible to solo unless you got a plan. its as simple as that. (my plan was the lay and the no power costing huge heal) if some group happened to kill some monsters around it, its possible. but i wont call that solo cus they helped you (not with that reason or knowing it, but they did)

<2007-12-12 23:06:43>
<Guest>I managed to solo it as lvl45. I first went to the right until i reached some cliffs. From there i could run to the stone in the middle of the area(on the left side). And then i went to the south (watch out for the drake) and there is a path there were no enemies are. Stood there and waited for two of the trolls(that is closest to the "empty path") to walk away a little from the last one. I shot an arrow into him so he rushed against me while i ran past him and inside the path behind him and there was the huorn (to the left). It is easily grabbed. After that i evac out and survived!

<2007-12-14 22:27:15>
<Guest>It is next to Onodrim. Soloed it at 42, hunter. Other calsses and lower levels should be able to run in, click on the hearwood, then die. Level 42 or so, you should be able to run in, grab it and run out.

<2008-01-12 21:38:51>
<Guest>thank you very much to guest who posted loc 35.8S, 7.2W...I used hobbit stealth to get past first drake...was spotted by a bat and ran off agrro...got to 72.w and knew it was due south....ran past the trolls and grabbed the wood right before dying. lvl 31 hunter

<2008-01-14 21:34:00>
<Guest>This quest is now marked as fellowship

<2008-01-31 22:45:19>
Illuminatus <Guest>Soloed with a L45 Elf Hunter with noone having cleared anything beforehand... ran in, the large aggro range of the drakes I had seen on the giant quests didn't seem to be so long this time (no they weren't grey to me) as I ran past one in the narrow entrance without it noticing (I think perhaps its back was turned) pulled some worm and bats, ran until only one bat was on me and klled it easily. Using the western coords given here I figured out which troll-guarded entrance to use, waited until the troll on the left hand side was walking around and used Elf racial stealth (note I have 2 +2 stealth items - pocket and cloak) with distance between me and the right one and the left ones back turned. They didn't notice me going through, and I got to heartwood with no further mobs, picked up, and then ported to Esteldin to make my bow. Elf Hunters rock :)

Soloing <2008-02-08 19:54:12>
Valimar <Guest>I will be soloing this later today, Drake NP, one Giant NP, multiple wood trolls may be a problem. Then again I am working on a passed over craft. 50 Capt, GM WS, GM PR, M WW. Arkenstone if you want to tell.

soloable <2008-03-30 19:06:20>
Gilthanas <Guest>I soloed this with lvl 21 elf hunter. First time I just ran there and drake killed me in three hits... Then, I just used sylvan shadows and were careful. There was no-one else there clearing mobs so there was MANY elites, but I managed to sneak all the way to heartwood, grabbed it and then took desperate flight to nearest rally point.

<2008-04-06 09:14:37>
duke <Guest>i got to the location but no heart wood. anyhelp???

<2008-04-08 23:04:27>
duke <Guest>nevermind found it

UPDATED LOCATION <2008-04-21 22:46:29>
Galdavon <Guest>***UPDATED LOCATION*** Can someone update the location on the map? The correct location is stated above, but it hasn't been updated on the map. Correct and verified location is 35.8S, 7.2W. We completed this quest tonight, but had to get through two drakes and huge rock-hurler. No wood trolls, thankfully!! :) Enjoy, and happy woodworking!

easy <2008-04-25 22:24:45>
edgelong <Guest>level 40 hunter soloed easily using sylvan shadows,just strolled on in and picked it up, no combat at all

<2008-06-02 08:52:54>
jason <Guest>It should be noted that the wood is picked up instantly. You don't have to do the kneel down and use routine. So, if you do get aggro..just grab and die/escape.

Aggro <2008-06-19 17:31:54>
Artphul <Guest>With the recent updates you get aggro from miles away or at least out of sight now if you are an extreme lowbie like i was (11) My kin had to help me, its impossible without stealth now.

BLACK HUORN HEARTWOOD solo <2008-06-21 21:28:34>
Erlas <Guest>I solo'd it with my lvl 33 hunter, stealthed (sylvian shadows)

Mwha <2008-07-14 23:14:19>
SniperCT <Guest>Level 27 hunter, solo'd.

<2008-07-30 22:11:39>
Catamitus <Guest>Not sure but I just got done doing this quest. The Heartwood is no longer picked up instantly had a cast bar on it just like collecting wood.

<2008-08-06 00:17:13>
Korboo <Guest>Same here, there was a fairly long casting time for it. Trees got me, no chance without a group now.

<2008-09-06 21:32:47>
Smugo <Guest>Im a level 32 hunter should I bother trying to get it now?

<2008-09-14 07:46:19>
Cymric <Guest>lv 31 Hunter, sneak in but died when trying to get pass the guarding trolls. Completed the quest after waiting near the enterence til a group of 50s came and clear the mob. Best to do this quest on a weekend when lots of people are completing book 4

<2008-09-24 22:52:07>
<Guest>Has a cast timer on it, impossible solo at lvl 39 hunter.

<2008-10-24 01:30:42>
<Guest>Soloed with lvl37 hunter at the third attempt. Probably just luck, but those trolls are rather slow.. sure, I had to drink a refined athelas, but they gave me enough time to pick up the wood.

heartwood <2008-10-30 00:19:42>
Nialo <Guest>YEAH - THERE IS A TIMER!!!!!!!!!!!!! CHANGES HAVE BEEN MADE!!!!!!!!!!!!! MUST HAVE A GROUP OR BE ABLE TO STEALTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Im a lvl45 hunter, cannot do it without hobbit silence!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THREE WOOD TROLLS GUARDING THE GATE!!!!!!!!!!

<2008-12-29 23:56:47>
<Guest>Yeah wanted to clear up that there is a cast timer on it. I still managed to do it by myself - 40 Warden. I think i just lucky with running from aggro though. All I can say is stick to the walls when running.

<2009-01-01 00:16:56>
Tj <Guest>Used Sylvan shadows and pcked it up without agro at 42 hunter

It is possible to solo <2009-01-02 23:09:52>
Sarathorn <Guest>Ok first of all, drakes seems to be night time creature, go in day time and theres a heck of a lot less to worry about. I went in there with my lvl 36 hunter using sylvan shadow, take your time and you can sneak in. Note there is a timer for grabbing the heart and you will be visible while doing so, so watch out for the stone and wood troll patrolling, time it right and you can grab it and leg it out.

Easy to duo at low level <2009-01-22 22:13:39>
Tricksi <Guest>Did this twice. Once with level 42 Burg assisting level 31 hunter and once with level 46 LM assisting level 21 hunter. There is a long north-south valley just east of the heartwood that is perfect for setting up and for running away from aggro. With the burg, I riddled one troll, hit the "reset abilities" button, riddled a second and called to the hunter: "come get your wood" We had ten seconds to spare as we turned and ran down the aforementioned valley. With the Loremaster the same scheme worked. This time only one troll was in the way. One blinding flash later and we were hoofing it to safety. Any other pair could work with one person grabbing aggro while the quester grabs the goods.

<2009-02-23 21:32:49>
Cuuchulainn <Guest>Drakes are not nighttime. Went there at noon and they were prowling around.

<2009-03-22 22:55:39>
<Guest>With revive, it is quite easy now. Just run to the heartwood, get killed and wait for everyone to go away. You have plenty of time to examine it before a troll meanders by and kills you.

<2009-04-07 22:29:10>
<Guest>Solod at 39 hunter VERY easily. Slyvan shadows, went right next to it and clicked on it. Has a timer but a pretty fast one. Then DF outta there. Never took a hit. This is after getting killed 6 times trying to trap and run in.

... <2009-04-09 23:13:18>
Vaupell Soloed at 42 human hunter. Run into the grove next to the item, die and simply use revive when mobs are gone.

<2009-04-11 23:23:36>
Dalorien <Guest>Soloed with level 26 Dwarf minstrel. Used the die/revive method.

Level 35 Burg Solo'd <2009-05-10 15:40:03>
Tom <Guest>Cape has +2 to sneak but otherwise just used standard burg sneak. Just took it slow and easy and waited for bad guys to path away. Stuck very close to walls, walked up, clicked, done. No timer, no fighting, no aggro.

where is it? <2009-07-04 00:12:25>
jingledorin <Guest>Odd, im right next to the ent, there is nothing on the ground, could this be broken since the patch book 8 came out?

<2009-07-05 23:32:24>
icehawkIt is there, I did it today. Lvl 40 hunter, just used Sylvian Shadows all the way, went between the mobs in front of the heartwood, then take it and use desperate flight.

<2009-07-07 00:25:58>
Volk <Guest>Was there yesterday (July 5 09) and couldnt find anything on the ground

<2009-07-09 23:48:05>
Volk <Guest>after camping the spot in front of the named tree for several days (login on and off periodically) and not finding the update I've decided to delete the quest and start over. But when i arrived back to the spot (used die and revive) found no uodate yet again. Is it still at the same spot?

<2009-07-13 01:52:54>
Adoray <Guest>Hmm I ran there today and nothing either... log off and came back about hours later and it still wasn't there by onodrim or around tree. Has it been moved or on a Very long respawn timer?

<2009-07-16 03:29:33>
Arweeth <Guest>It has been moved behind the tree by the left (as you face the trolls) entrance.

<2009-07-17 03:36:53>
Stin <Guest>Solo'd as a 28 Hunter. Didn't need to use Sylvan Shadows. As Arweeth said: it's been moved behind a tree. The wood is past the first three wood trolls you see, but you can't see it when you approach that area. I ran past the trolls, behind them is a fairly large area with some elite mobs around the fringes. You want to die there and self-rez so that you drop aggro. Then you can walk over, pick up the wood, and get out. BTW - I solo'd as a 28 hunter, but I died several times trying to figure this out.

The Heart of the Wood Part 4 <2009-08-11 21:34:18>
Kronze <Guest>well i managed to get my lvl28 Warden into High Moor after running and quite a bit of dodging mobs that were generally 10 levels above him.i I just took my time doing it and used careful step when i had to and i managed to get him to the cliffs just south of the Giant quest giver without agroing any mobs at all.I then had to log out and get my 60 champ to ride from Rivendell to Giant Valley and clear the mobs between where i left my warden and the black Huon Heartwood.then i logged out my champ and relogged my warden ran in got the heartwood and ported out to Ost Guruth.Done.If you dont have a high lvl toon to do this you may want to get help to clear some of the mobs especially if you can't stealth.

<2009-08-31 22:37:36>
Mntneer <Guest>Just got it after 3 tries. Level 36 Hunter. Shadowed up to the the trolls at the entrance, fortunately there were only 2 not the normal 3. Ran in, got attacked, ran up to it as fast as I could, clicked on it, waited for the cast bar and fled out once getting it. Had I died I figured I would wait by it, then revive there and attempt it again.

Slackers <2009-10-08 01:12:34>
Anurwhoa <Guest>29 Captain did it EZ. Day time, entering valley hugged left wall. Watched the timing of stuff in valley. Had pet attack trolls at entrance, used haste and wiped but was clear so revived out of aggro. The location is hard U turn to the left past trolls. No delay to pick up so may have been able to do it with the wipe. EZ
